NYC - FiDi: Two World Trade Center Mural Project - Stickymonger Stickymonger painted this mural as part of the Two World Trade Center Mural Project in 2018. The Two World Trade Center Mural Project, backed by Silverstein Properties and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, brought well known street artists to decorate the large sheds surrounding the empty lot that will become Two World Trade Center--across from the Oculus, surrounded by Greenwich, Vesey and Church Streets. One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the 16-acre rebuilt World Trade Center complex. Designed in the contemporary modern style by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), construction started in 2006, was topped off in 2012, and the building opened in 2014. The supertall structure, which has the same name as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center and sits on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center--both of which were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001--was, at its completion, the tallest in North America and the sixth tallest in the world, reaching a height of 1,776 feet, including its spire. 7 World Trade Center officially opened on May 23, 2006 after the original was destroyed on September 11, 2001. It was the first building to be rebuilt with a World Trade Center address and was not included in the original World Trade Center master plan by Daniel Libeskind. The 52-story building, designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in conjunction with glass designer/artist James Carpenter, is 750 feet tall, and contains 1,700,000 square feet of leasable office space starting from the 11th floor. The first ten floors are devoted to an electrical substation which powers most of Lower Manhattan.
