Название: Ramesses Colossus, Luxor Temple Luxor Temple stands in the heart of the modern city close to the banks of the Nile. It is an impressive and largely complete structure dating back to the New Kingdom, constructed around c1400BC. Its main facade is still adorned with large sculptures of Ramesses II, along with one of a pair of obelisks that flanked the main entrance (the other now famously stands in Paris). The earliest parts of the complex were built under Pharoah Amenhotep III, with the main shrine (with later rebuilding by Alexander) and the papyrus-columned courtyard at the southern end dating from his reign. Also of this date is the monumental colonnade that forms the centre of the complex, with a mighty avenue of columns flanked by corridors finished by Amenhotep III's grandson, Tutankhamun. The first parts of the temple the visitor encounters, the facade with its twin pylon-towers followed by the colonnaded first courtyard date from the following dynasty and were mostly constructed during the reign of Ramesses II, whose colossal statues are omnipresent in these areas to make his authorship all the more apparent. The first courtyard is still partially occupied by a mosque dedicated to a local holy-man, Abu el Haggag. Attempts to relocate the shrine and reveal the hidden parts of the ancient structure beneath have so far been resisted. Finally the temple is preceded by an avenue of sphinxes that originally extended all the way to Karnak temple roughly a mile away. Much of the course of the avenue was recently excavated (at huge cost involving much demolition in central Luxor) and has not yet fully opened. The sphinxes at this southern end are the best preserved, and were installed by one of the very last native pharoahs, Nectanebo I. Our visit was rather late in the day, thus the light rapidly diminished on arrival, so we instead experienced the temple mostly floodlit, which was a rather magical experience.
