Holy Land Map Mosaic, St George's, Madaba The Greek Orthodox church of St George in Madaba is famous for its ancient mosaic floor which represents a map of the Holy Land as existed in the 5th century AD. Although in fragmentary condition the mosaic is one of the most significant archaeological remains as an important historical document. The church itself is of far more recent date but stands on the site of an earlier church. It is adorned with several fine mosaics and frescoes in the Byzantine tradition. / VFL.Ru
