Downtown NYC One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the 16-acre rebuilt World Trade Center complex. Designed in the contemporary modern style by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), construction started in 2006, was topped off in 2012, and the building opened in 2014. The supertall structure, which has the same name as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center and sits on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center--both of which were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001--was, at its completion, the tallest in North America and the sixth tallest in the world, reaching a height of 1,776 feet, including its spire.
